Block Island Surprise Proposal to get engaged
Mohegan Bluffs is the perfect place on Block Island to pull out a diamond ring propose to your significant other and get engaged! Located in New Shoreham RI, the Southeast Lighthouse is on the Southeast side of Block Island. The Lighthouse is up on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. You can go down off the bluff to the beach below, but not from the lighthouse. You have to go around the corner to the Bluff Overlook, where you will find both a beautiful view and the 141 steps down to the beach below. It’s a walk that’s not handicap accessible. As for the lighthouse, don't get confused with the second lighthouse called the North Light, on the North Side of the island.
Southeast Lighthouse is about 1.5 miles from the Town center and was erected in 1875.
The hours of the Southeast Lighthouse from their website are:
- In the Summer (through Labor Day): Daily 10 am–4 pm
- In Fall (through October 8): Weekends 10 pm–4 pm
- Winter: Closed
- Grounds are open daily, from sunrise to sunset
If you are planning a trip to Block Island, keep in mind the weather and the ferries, and plan accordingly. Log in to the Block Island Chamber of Commerce and keep an eye on their Facebook pages and X notifications. The Ferry will cancel due to weather and has been known to shut down for three days at a time.. If you have a car that you want to bring with you, it can mean you’re stranded on the island for a day or three. If you are going without your car, you can take a plane ride over if the Ferry shuts down, but tickets are more expensive. In and around Massachusetts, you can catch a plane from New Bedford Airport, Hyannis, Worcester, Martha’s Vineyard, and Providence, RI. Airfare can run anywhere from $200 to-500 round-trip. If you are coming from New York, you can take a private plane from Farmdale, NY, with private planes costing between $1200-$12,000 a trip. The plane from Block Island to Westerly can run about $1200 for a one-way ticket. Through action air. If you go through another charter service, it can run about $625. Block Island is a 30-minute ferry ride from Pt. Judith, Rhode Island, on the fast ferry, and a 1-hour ride on the traditional/car ferry. You do have to call to make reservations to bring your car over, you can’t do it online. The last ferry off the island at night is 7 PM. If you don’t want to bring your car over, you can grab cabs all over the island. If daring enough, there are mopeds you can rent or bikes available.
When proposing on Block Island, have a backup plan if you are hiring a photographer. There is spotty reception all over the island, and getting in touch via text messages out at the Lighthouse can be tricky. Also, make sure you plan months in advance. Block Island tends to book up fast for summer reservations. They require a two-night minimum in most hotels and can only accommodate up to five people in a room. The ferry leaves the island for the last time at 8:30 PM.
