Fall in New England is the most popular time to get photos done. Second are Summer Portraits on the beach. If you are even thinking of having a family portrait taken in Reading, Andover, North Reading, Lynnfield, or Wilmington, book early! Photographers book up so quickly that you are liable to miss out.
For photo sessions that you are going to put on your Christmas card, you want to dress work casual. You don't want to be too dressy in heels and a skirt, but having nice pants on and a collared shirt or sweater is a must.
It's always a huge mistake to try to overdress the kids. You don't want to get too fancy. Shy away from big collars on the little ones. Try to make sure the outfit fits them because if it's too big it will bunch up and will need constant fixing. If the little one can sit up, we often suggest bare feet. while props are cute, they often distract a little one from the photos. Also, we don't suggest bribing or showing the little one food. We see all too often people have shown the baby that they have goldfish or a lollipop and that's all the little one can fixate on. Give the food as a reward for a job well done but don't let them see it before the shoot is over.
Make sure all the adults are looking at the camera. The photographer will get the baby and kids' attention. We make crazy noises and jump up and down and look silly, but our method has worked for almost 15 years. Parents focus on the photographer and let us focus on getting everyone looking. If they aren't looking I will let you know.
