This has to be one of the best black-and-white lifestyle family photos I have taken around Boston. The mom wanted the typical newborn photos with the props and the blankets. We ended up doing a mix of different types of photos. The photo had a lot of business so we converted it to black and white.
Typically I do lifestyle portraits where you see the family interacting with the baby. On this day we did both formal photos and lifestyle photos. This photo was shot with a big window in front of everyone and they held the baby and looked at him. I love this photo because it shows how happy everyone is with the new baby. I love that it's in black and white and that the baby was sleeping.
This depends on when you mean "time". If you mean the time of day, whenever the baby is sleeping! If it means how many days after the baby is born, I recommend between 7-10 days. You don't want to go much longer because the baby isn't as sleepy. The baby is also much more alert and you really just want to get the baby as calm and as sleepy as possible.
I recommend you keep it simple. You don't want to put a newborn in a crazy outfit. Personally, I really like naked babies, swaddled, with bare feet. Newborn babies are SO tiny, you don't want to have to fuss with new buttons or snaps. On the flip side, babies tend to spit up and poop a LOT so you just should keep it simple. If you are a new mom, try and relax. Not only have I been a photographer for 15 years, but I am also the mom of 3 beautiful children for the last 8 years. I have seen it all! I have done it all! Babies can be super scary, but for a photography shoot, you want to bring patience and understanding. These are memories you are making.
